Gigging

I’m fortunate to have a music studio located in my home.  As such, honing my songwriting, music production, piano, and vocal craft after breakfast is simply a commute up the stairs.  Turning a room into a music studio was an arduous process involving extensive soundproofing, gear, research, etc.  Expensive as hell, but worth every penny. These days, students and clients visit frequently, and although I genuinely enjoy spending my days with singers new and familiar, mixing audio, and surfing the net in my sunny alcove (a pre-requisite was a large window for natural lighting), I maintain a performer’s desire for musical interaction outside the studio.  Live gigging, whether on a small or large scale, is the best way to grow as an artist, refine musicianship, and hone live performance skills.

Currently, I’m musical directing the “For the Love” concert series at Toshi’s Living Room, in the Flatiron district in NYC at 26th & Broadway.  Every Monday night, some of the city’s best singers, from indie artists, to American Idol finalists, to Broadway singers stop by to share songs with an international audience in an intimate, hip new space.  I generally sing 2 covers and an original song, and play piano for the other performers. The incomparable Paul Beaubrun of Zing Experience joins on drums. The line-up changes each week, as do the songs.  It’s all very good for the brain.

Another favorite venue of mine is The Bitter End, NYC’s oldest rock club.  I met my wife here years ago (no joke).  Yes, it’s a small place and the piano has cigarette burn marks on some of the keys, but everyone from Billy Joel, to Stevie Wonder, to Lady Gaga has played here.  In the picture above, I’m playing for one of my clients, talented singer/songwriter Shilpa Narayan earlier this month. People seem to dig the hat, so I’ve been wearing it to all April gigs.

When the situations arise, I break out the violin. I’m deeply grateful to my parents and teachers for all those lessons growing up. Being on the roster of some pop music contractors has given me the opportunity to play with acts including Florence + The Machine, Boyz II Men, Anita Baker, and others.  Here’s a glimpse of me backing Florence Welch on MTV Unplugged.  The performance was recorded live and a deluxe album released this month on Universal Island Records.  Looking forward to new opportunities as 2012 progresses!

New Song ~ Another Place

Another Place is a new song I wrote about loss, and the heartfelt desire to be with someone who has passed.  The tune’s a pop ballad in the Randy Newman tradition, yet evokes some Sondheim harmonic influence.

ANOTHER PLACE Lyrics
© 2012 Jerry Jean

Dreamed I’d get to paradise
One day,
Wouldn’t that be nice?

Clear skies, and avenues
No cars, just our running shoes.

But it’s lonely now
I tell you
I’m living day by day
I’m blue
Without you.

I’m waiting for the light change
Waiting for my luck to change
Waiting for the morning air to touch my face
Take me there
To another place
Another place

VERSE 2
I heard there’s a pot of gold
At the end of some rainbow, but I’m not so sure now
I walk down the stairs, and you’re not there.

Time can rips memories
I’m losing my energy, rapidly now.

Guess I’m fading as you fade too.

And it’s lonely now
I tell you
I’m living day by day
Still blue
Without you.

CHORUS

Where you are.

Jerry Jean with friends at Toshi's Living Room, NYC

I had the chance to debut Another Place live at a Toshi’s Living Room in NYC last week. Toshi’s is a new, intimate Manhattan venue with an illuminated corner stage, flanked by wide windows looking out on NYC’s Flatiron district. Joined by some pretty friends on stage after the gig!

FIGHTING FOR YOU – Be A Linchpin

Thanks for all the support for Fighting For You over the past few days!

I want to share Track 2 on the album with you. The song’s called Linchpin, and it champions the importance of creating art and value in whatever you do. It was inspired and named after Seth Godin’s book Linchpin: Are You Indispensable, a crucial read.

Being a cog in the wheel is no fun, and yet too many people (I’m no exception) get scared to break out of the usual rut.  I wrote this song to explore the internal battle between being an artist – an indispensable Linchpin who creates value – and being the other person, the one who dwells in safety due to fear.  Choose to be the Linchpin and give the world your gifts!

Get the entire album for $4.95 on iTunes, Amazon, or CDBaby.

FIGHTING FOR YOU, Album by Jerry Jean, Releasing Worldwide 2/14/12, Valentine’s Day!

It’s done!  Fighting For You, my EP album of original songs, will be released worldwide on 2/14/12 (Valentine’s Day). The album will be available as a physical CD, and for digital download & streaming internationally on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, and many others.

What does the music sound like?  Think vocally driven tunes, heavy on melody, generous electronic and acoustic instruments, and abundant grooves.  Think rich vocal harmonies, unique piano & keyboards sounds, and a sonic imprint reminiscent of artists including One Republic, Ben Folds Five, Michael Bublé, and David Choi.

The songs were recorded in my home studio in Harlem, where I crafted each lyric, played every instrument, sequenced each beat, recorded all vocals, and mixed all the audio myself.  Doing everything in-house comprised a vertical integration of labor that sucked out most of my November and December 2011. The paradoxical, time-eating goal was to be a specialist in many musical and technical departments.  Listening to the completed EP, I am very proud of everything learned, accomplished, and created!

The year leading up to this album has been charged with life changes: I started the road of married life, moved to a permanent (for the foreseeable future) Harlem home, finished school, and plucked my first grey hair.  The songs on the album explore love, transitions, and the pursuit of goals.  I hope they resonate with you, and that you’ll enjoy listening to them as much as I cherished making the album.

Big thanks to my friends, both the musicians and non-musicians, for taking the time to listen to early mixes. Thanks to my beautiful wife and family.  And of course, thanks to all you awesome people who have been following my work online.  Y’all rock!

Only 2 weeks until 2/14/12, Valentine’s Day, when the album drops.  Spread the word, and help an independent artist get on the charts by purchasing the album on that day!

Love you all.

New Mash-Up: It Will Rain & The One That Got Away

Blonde knockout Kristina Pantelides, a Greek singer with a killer pop voice, was over at the studio recently, and we created a mash-up of Bruno Mars’ It Will Rain and Katy Perry’s The One That Got Away.  Both songs capture the angst of young love and complement each other like a teenage sleepover and The Twilight series.  I went for a gritty, raspy sound on my vocals for this one, and let my hair drape on my face K-Pop style.  Kristina sang her heart out in her YouTube debut, and we hope to make more vids together in the future. Enjoy, and share if you like it!

The Battle is Over, featuring Kay Trinidad

My friend, Filipina songstress Kay Trinidad was over last week, and she did an awesome job covering The Battle Is Over, one of my original songs.  We recorded live (no lip-syncing).  Kay is a super talented singer-actress whom I met back when we were both students at NYU.  I had a part time job playing piano for the Tisch All School Choir where she was a stand-out.  She left school to star in an Off-Broadway show called Bare A Pop Opera, and has since performed on Broadway in the original cast of The Little Mermaid.  We fortuitously reconnected earlier this month at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall, where we were both involved in a benefit concert for the Philippines.  The Battle is Over is a reminder that – in spite of daunting life challenges – there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I wrote this song to highlight this silver lining, even if it can seem at times distant. Check out my original solo version video, and grab it on iTunes.  You can also download the MP3 of this version featuring Kay for free here.
